Why There is Certainly No Such Place as Hell - in Three Simple Propositions

Why There is Certainly No Such Place as Hell - in Three Simple Propositions

1) In the belief system of the Christian life only exists because it is a gift from God. God is the reason for everything. There is no other source.

2) Death happens because God no longer supplies the ‘breath of life’. And any ongoing consciousness after an earthly death is possible only because of that continued gift of life that is from God.

3) Therefore the concept of a hell means that God intends to keep on supplying life to everybody who has existed to ensure that a large proportion of them suffer torture, pain and misery for ever.

So the challenge is this, can somebody explain how a believer can reconcile proposition 3 with the God of Love that is supposed to be portrayed in the Bible?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is pretty much the only question that needs to be answered. There isn’t much more to say on the topic. But further explanations on each of the above propositions are given below if anyone is interested.

1) Life is not something that is seen as an inalienable right. It is something that is “given” to us. There is no “eternal’ soul to be found in Christianity like those described by Ancient Greek thinking or Eastern Philosophical ideas. The notion of a separate eternal soul did infiltrate Christianity primarily through Saint Augustine in the 4th century. But acceptance of it has never been universal, and it is not Scriptural (that’s an important fact to believers who are Protestants). Some Christians differentiate between body and soul, and see the soul as the thing that separates from the body and goes on after death. Others see the individual as one whole and unique creation by God, and who or what gets resurrected at the “End of Time" is the subject of some ongoing debate. But no Christian believes that the soul exists independently of God as it does in intellectual systems like some forms of Buddhism, or Hindu concepts of reincarnation. As stated above any ongoing consciousness after death is only possible because of God’s willingness to continue to supply that gift of life. He is the source of everything. Full stop!

2) Whether you are resting in the grave waiting for the promised resurrection at the time of the Apocalypse, as some Christians believe, or you are immediately transported to a place called heaven, as the vast majority believe, any ongoing consciousness after an earthly demise will again only be possible because of the gift of life that is continually and graciously supplied to us by God. Full stop again!

3) The concept of hell means God is purposefully going to continue to supply life so that billions and billions of people can suffer miserably for ever and ever. If according to the Psalms a person is allotted a life span of the metaphorical “Three Score Years and Ten”, then the punishment for disobeying God, eternal hell, does seem a tad excessive by comparison, and certainly doesn’t appear to fit the crime; i.e. 70 years of indolence down here, followed by incredible and willfull pain and misery in another place called hell that’s never-ending and with no escape. Final full stop!
